I will be travelling on my own to NZ for six months of backpacking bliss, and although I am really excited, I am also quite nervous about (this is going to sound a bit silly) getting on the flight alone and changing planes half way through the journey. I know these are irrational fears and I am definitely going, but y’know sometimes the first step is the hardest…….
Can anyone identify? |

It's not so bad.... it seems really scary at first, but after awhile, you'll enjoy it. No one to wait on, your own itenarary, best of all no one bitching about their hang over and they can't get out of bed! As far as flying alone goes, it does suck, but just let the stewards know you are alone, pop a sleeping pill, and sleep it off. It's much better that way. I am also going to be traveling for many months on my own in Europe this summer, so I share your fear (mine more on safety, a couple cocktails later and everyone is my best friend!)I hear the Kiwi's and the Aussie's are a fun-loving bunch, you should have no problem making friends quick. Good luck!

Hi, I'm a kiwi living in the UK for the last 4 years. I moved over here on my own and often travel solo. You will have a wicked time in NZ, people are really friendly, and you will meets lots of other travellers. If you don't know something, just ask. Don't stress about changing planes etc, airports are well sign posted. Look out for other travellers on the flight to chat to, there will always be at least one!

Hi Jessie. Just like yourself this is also my 1st trip to Nz & Oz. I too will be flying myself. I know it will be a bit off a struggle getting on it in the 1st place. But i'm sure once on there will be support from other backpackers on the flight. The way around this for me is to have a stopover in Hong Kong for 3 days. So i can have time to recharge the batteries. Contact with times off when you are going out and will try and meet up if possible. I leave the UK on 28th May this yr. Good luck

I lived in japan for a year and a half solo, then back packed s e asia for 2 months solo, even went to seoul by myself for 4 days.
U will totally enjoy it! The thing is- u are never alone- you choose whether or not u will eat alone- it forces you to be very social. Its funny the things that happen when you are solo. Like I said I backpacked, and ended up traveling with 2 canadian girls whom I met on the border of thai and cambodia. We were together 4 two weeks, had wicked times, but the real adventures began when I left them. With the stop overs... its really dummy proof. They remind you on the plane about transerfering !Its worth it to save a few bucks!Ask if you not certain! Nooo worries mate! Have fun and BE confident!!! my moto was "I gotta make this look easy!!" cheers! |
