I just wanted to make women travellers going to Morocco aware of potential danger have just come back from a 5 day break there. I went to Essaouira for the annual music festival and unfortunately had a terrifying ordeal whilst there. I was walking along the beach with a female friend on my way to one of the music stages when we were attacked, sexually assaulted and robbed by a massive group of teenage boys (aged 10-18). I estimate that there were about 100 of them - without any exaggeration. I really want to raise awareness of this as I found out later from locals that it had happened to others and seems to be an increasing problem. Some young men/boys go to these destinations/events just to grope the tourists. To make matters worse, when we went to the local police they did not take us seriously and responded by being sleazy, dismissive & obstructive - telling us that the police station was closed when in fact it was open. I don't want to create hysteria - Essaouira is a beautiful place and worth a visit - but I want to make women travellers aware of the danger, especially as it has not been publicised locally in Essoueira and remains an unknown. My advice would be for women to stay with the main crowds and not go anywhere with bad lighting at night - even if there are other people around or you are being accompanied by other friends. If you see a big group of men or boys do create distance from them immediately and move somewhere else. Other than that I had had an amazing time. Please stay safe and have fun.
