I've been wondering what is perceived to be the safest country in Africa to travel.

My vote is with the Kingdom of Swaziland. It is sooooooo relaxed, everyone speaks English and its off the beaten track enough to have escaped all the con artists which pop up around busy centres.

The fact the the country is so small probably helps to make it more

Perhaps Botswana 2nd and Malawi 3rd, What thoughts ? Strawbs

We visited Tunisia last year and travelled around a fair bit, including self-drive trips into the Sahara. We did not feel "unsafe" at any time, and found the people friendly and charming.

Just got back.

Charming country. Lots of friendly people, although the resort areas were a touch 'tacky'. Had a wonderful time up country and out in the bush.

It's beginning to sound as though large parts of the contient aren't so dark and scary as many would have us believe. Is it possible that there are people there who, in many ways, are rather like "us"?

I live in Bamako, Mali and I find it pretty safe in comparison to other African capitals. The south of Mali is pretty good too, although you are more in danger of being run off the road by coaches (I kid you not).

However, The far north of Mali is pretty well a 'no go' area because of banditry, especially north of Timbuctou. Remember that it was only last January that a group of tourists were kidnapped. It all depends who you talk to .. many people have travelled there and had no problem. But people here are playing safe and are cautious when travelling north, even to travelling in convoy. Most Malians I know say one should not travel outside the city limits after dark, but travel in the city is fine.

Dear Friend,

Personally the best and safest place to visit in Africa i Tanzania no doubt abbout it. Even though crisis are in the neibouring countries but this has not affected tanzania at all, it is the most peaceful country in whole of africa.

Good Luck
