I hope someone can help with this possibly misguided line of thought.

Ok first off, I am heading to South Africa to work in Soweto in February 2004.

Most people I have spoken to say that I should probably live in Joburg and commute.

But I don’t have any transport, I was thinking maybe of buying a car, but that would be expensive (any idea of prices??), so I was thinking hey, what about a motorcycle (any idea of cost??), that could be convenient, cheap and efficient.

So does any one out there have any advice or more importantly about riding and traveling in south Africa on a motorcycle.

Is it safe enough to ride from Joburg to Soweto on a motorcycle, ive heard of the car jacking thing and the robberies?

What about the roads? other road users? insurance? car/motorcycle theift?

Any one knows about motorcycle stuff along that line or any information would be appreciated.
