I'll be travelling to South Africa in late March and plan to visit Kruger. Does anyone have suggestions for places to stay? I'm looking for a rest camp or game reserve that's comfortable, but rustic.

Marloth Park is a kind of vacation home town situated in the bushfeld at the southern edge of Kruger National Park. The wild animals from the park roam the streets of Marloth Park. You must believe it! You will see all the animals walking in the yard of the house you rent. And rentals are cheap. Starting at around $30US for a 2 bedroom house. There are several rental agents to contact or just show up and ask at the community store where you can rent a house. Very casual. The Crocodile Bridge Gate of Kruger is about 20 minute drive from Marloth Park. Safaris depart from Marloth Park. http://www.marlothpark.comd
I visited the Kruger 18 months ago. Everything is wonderful except the food - which is unbelievably disgusting. I strongly suggest you take food in with you - which is what the locals do - and use the BBQ's which are freely available. I was warned about this and didn't believe my informant. To my stomach's detriment.

I stayed in Olifants and Lower Sabie - both rated high from guide books. I found Olifants must nicer - overlooking the river where I saw plenty of hippos and several elephant herd crossing. (You don't need binos to see well though.) I stayed one night at each camp since I'd already spent several nights in a private reserve at that point. Though the camps were only 100km apart (I think) it took us 6 or 8 hours to get to the other as we kept finding interesting things along the way and had to stopped for a herd of elephants crossing the roads (and the young ones would stop and play in the middle of the road). I'd advise you to stay in one place for several nights. Also remember to bring drinks and snack in the car. Buy them before you get in the park - your choices are very limited there. Have fun.

...sorry for the typo... I meant you "do" need binos to see well down the river!
I suggest hiring yourself a car/combi from Nelspruit (town about 1hr from kruger) and driving yourself around. Its so much cheaper than going on organised drives....and you will have much more freedom. 'Tempest' car hire in Nelspruit do a special backpackers rate, under 20 pounds for a day. They have branches all over SA, we drove to Durban from Nelspruit through swaziland, and dropped the car off there.... they were a really friendly and relaxed company. Also recommend funky monkeys backpackers in Nelspruit.

i have just returned from the KNP.the food in the restaurants is poor, particularly in the evening self service buffet ( R80 pp ), i would recommend that you should BBQ your own food, as there is a large well stocked supermarket selling food & charcoal.
When we travelled up to that part of the world we found that GRASKOP was the ideal location to saty in. It is malaria free and very close to Kruger. Graskop is also close to all other sights and attractions; - Gods Window, The Pinnacle, Wonderview, Mac Mac Pools, Lisbon Falls, Forest Falls, Bourkes Luck, Pilgrims Rest to mention but a few - and so many other interesting places. Graskop has many types of accomodation. We stayed at a place called Elbereth House. It was a self cacter facility. It easlily accomodated all 8 of us and the neat part was that we did NOT need to share with any strangers. We booked it by phoning locally 013-767-1626 - if you phone from outside of SA phone +2713-767-1626. They also do Foreign currency which was great for the one family in our group.
I have been in that area often - so if anyone wants additional info I like sharing my experiences of the area, drop me a line.
