Well, I've done quite a lot, but the best trips would be ...
In Africa : It would have to be the short ride from George to Knysna in the Southern Cape of South Africa. Its a 60-odd km trip through forests, next to the sea, over lakes and across rivers - fabulous. Its classified as a "musuem line" and trains are hauled by steam engines. See Outeniqua Choo-Choo. The trip from Cape Town to Caledon over Sir Lowry's Pass in South Africa is also spectacular, but this route no longer has a scheduled passenger service ; only way to do it is via one of the occasional "special trains". In Europe : Myrdal to Flam in Norway. The train goes down a mind-bogglingly steep gradient via multiple spirals and tunnels until it reaches the Sognefjord at (almost) sea-level. See NSB. The trip along the south of France (via places like Monaco, Nice and Cannes) is also pretty spectacular. In Asia/Australasia : Cairns to Kuranda in northern Queensland. Also steam-hauled, the train rides through rain-forest, over rickety bridges and through tunnels. See Kuranda Scenic Railway. The ride north from Sydney in NSW to Coffs Harbour in Queensland is also spectacular in places. In North America : Los Angeles to Seattle. This is an overnight trip, but the scenery in California (next to the sea) and in the north in Oregon and Washington is fabulous. See Coast Starlight. |
