Can anyone give me any information about travelling through the northern region of Kenya: the Cherangani Hills, the Pokot-region, Lake Turkana (west side of the lake, Lodwar) and is it possible with local transport? Many thanks!

I was on the Western side of the lake in December. It was very hot and dry and a world apart but was left with a real feeling of adventure. There was no problem getting a bus from Kitale, people are always happy to direct you. The road is not too bad although the window next to me fell out and I spent part of the journey with it across my lap until I palmed it off to another passenger. Without a window and travelling at pace I was very windswept but cool.
Stepping off the bus attracted the usual interest and hassle. After a journey, I don't encourage people to follow me about and always make for a cafe or bar, sit for a while, let things calm down, gather my thoughts, check the security of my backpack and work out my next move. I stayed at the Turkwell Lodge which is ok. They have an extensive menu but it's best to find out what they've actually got. For a while I would place an order, the waiter would disappear for some time, return to tell me my choice was not available, over and over again. You won't starve.
There was no problem getting from Lodwar to Kalokol. It was Sunday and I understand it is easier on other days. I had to wait until about 10a.m. The back of a covered truck on wooden bench seats was fine. From Kalokol to the Lake, a good way if you don't fancy the walk is on the back of of a bike ( boda-boda ), they hadn't got round to putting padded seats on the back as in other places but sitting on the metal rack was ok as the ride was not too far, about 20 mins. I would have stayed longer than I did but New Years Eve was approaching and had to get back to Kitale to celebrate with friends. I will return. ENJOY.
