I would like to share with u an unfortunate experience I’ve been through while traveling in Kenya. I hope this will warn and help other travelers not to fall in to the same trap.
I took a 7-day Safari trip from company named “PLANET SAFARI” based in Nairobi, on the Moi Avenue Street. I paid 65$ per day, and was shown a very nice plan for each day, that included lots of sightseeing and stuff: Masai Mara, Lake Nakuru, Lake Naivashi, etc… But all this was only for show as I realized later…
Also I specifically asked if they have a nice group of people close to my age, that I can join cause otherwise I may be bored for 7days. Of course they told me that they have just the group for me, I didn’t realized that it means – we just take his money and later we will see.

On the first two days everything was indeed fine I got a nice group and we had fun seeing Masai Mara.
But than on the third day the problems started, my first group left cause they took only three days safari, and I needed to be taken by car to see other places, but they didn’t have any plans or car for me. So they just attached me to a new group that arrived to the Masai Mara in the morning, and they took me AGAIN on the same route and places like our first group did, for the full day instead of seeing something new I was just repeating the day before! And that’s when I pay 65$ per day!
I told that I don’t like it to the driver and he said that -”don’t worry tomorrow everything will be fine”. (the driver got his orders from the head office in Nairobi, so he is not responsible for any of the shortcoming that come later, he is a cool guy actually).
Forth day they indeed finally found a car to take me to lake Nakuru, but guess what? I was the only one in the trip for the next three day, cause they said that don’t have any group now taking the same Safari! So why did they told me that they have a nice group for me? I would never take a safari knowing I would have to be alone with the driver for three days!! It’s just depressing!
But that’s not all, on the day 4 we where driving from Masai Mara to Lake Nakuru for 8 hours, because the driver choose some bad road, and when we arrived to the camp he told me that there is no plans for me to see anything for today, that this was a “driving day”! But that’s not what they promiced me by their plan!!! I was supposed to see lake Nakuru on this day! Again it was 65$ for nothing.
Fifth day started ok, but than the car broke down two times, so we spend around 5 hours waiting and fixing it, also I was taken to some restaurant they chose for me for eating, as I realized at night it was a bad restaurant I got a very serious diarrhea and in the morning I found myself in the hospital, and stayed there for the next two days until the end of the 7days of safari. You may think that at least the driver will wait for me and bring me back to Nairobi after the 7days like they where supposed to by the plan, but it was not the case.
After the company realized that I will be spending the rest of my safari in hospital they decided that I no longer need the driver or the car, and it will be more efficient for them to give him new assignment. So I was just left there in the hospital, with no idea how to come back in my condition.
I must tell that they didn’t abandon me completely, they said that as soon as they have a car passing in the direction I need, they will give me a free ride, but for this I needed to wait in Nakuru for two days after I got out of the hospital, doing nothing, just waiting for the ride to Nairobi. Of course I took a bus and didn’t wait for their mercy.

As soon as I got to Nairobi, I went straight to the “Planet Safari” Office to talk with the two managers Charlz and James that are in charge of everything there.
I told them that I want part of my money back based on all what happened, especially on the bunch of lies about what they promised for me to see, and the “group” they had for me. Also about complete lack of planning and logistics, as a result of complete ignorance: “he already paid the money, why should we care what happens to him now” also “he is just one guy, he can’t make lots of noise”.
In short they didn’t care what I had to say and didn’t want to give me back any money, they continued to lie every second of the conversation bending the truth and making a complete fool out of me. I can list here all the lies but it would be to long for this letter, which is very big already.
Again I must confess that they agreed to take me out for a dinner on their account, but not give me any money. A dinner in Kenya costs 5-8$ max so it’s a joke, also I don’t need any dinner from them and especially with them.

When I realized that there is no way to get some money back, I told them that in this case I will have to write about everything what happened to “Lonely Planet” and on other travelers forums, also I would post a warning about them on the board of my hostel where I am staying.
Now comes the part that shocked me most and freaked the hell out of me.
James said:
-“Roy, you know people in Nairobi die every day, and for no reason, do u understand me?”
Of course I understood immediately, that I need to get of there, and out of Nairobi cause there indeed a person can vanish or at least to be beaten severely by bandits on the street even without anyone especially asking them to target me specifically.
I think that they crossed all red lines at the moment. I baked off and said that I am not going to write about it, and will think about their dinner proposition, just to calm them down.
I though about going to the police, but I had no proof, and u know how corrupted the police in this countries are. They may at best just waive me out, and on the next day something bad will happen to me…

So I left Nairobi as soon as I could. Now I am safely home and can write about this story.

Please warn other travelers, Planet Safari is not the best choice!
A lot of lies, Also if thing go really wrong it becomes just life hazard.
But in the beginning before the money is taken they are the sweetest people on Earth…

Roy.
