Well the obvious route to go is to Banf, have a look around there, Lake Louise etc and on towards Kamloops via the Icefield Parkway. Nothing much at Kamloops, just a big tourist hub of hotels and motels but a good stop for an easy drive into Vancouver (Golden has nice motels too but still a day away from Vancouver). How long do you have? that's the most important factor. If you just have a day (although realistically I think it would take two)then you'll be driving non stop just admiring the scenery as it flies past, 5 days you'll have got to see a nice chunk of the Rockies. Try to spare the time, it's worth it.
