I am taking my elderly parents to Las Vegas (their first time to the States) for 9 days. I have a car for the duration, can anyone give advice on places to see ? We are not going to drive to the GC (heli trip). What attractions are within 3/4 hours drive?
You'll go mad in Vegas for 9 days! take a tour around the Grand circle (ask for a map in the tourist info) Drive to the GC, get a plane tour not a helicopter, plane is 100% better. Drive north to Bryce Canyon (Zion if you like it pretty but there's not much to do unless you want to walk) then north to Capitol Reef, east to Canyonlands and Arches (make sure when you're in Arches you go to the "windows" as it's the best bit) and then South through Moab and on to Mesa Verde, Canyon de Chelley and Monument Valley. A long drive but doable. I took my father in March and we had a fantastic time, best holiday ever and the scenery was stunning! For short day trips from Vegas there's not a great deal to see, you have to drive very long distances to see the good stuff. It's nearly 300 miles to the GC. Day trips tend to be Hoover Dam or Red rock Canyon. Email me if you need more info. Mork

Yeah, I have advice. Rent a car and drive as far away from vegas as possible. Is it just me or does this place totally suck unless you are a big gambler???
Ok, in all seriousness, if you are going there, be sure to walk around and look at the different casinos/hotels on the strip, they are pretty neat... and see some shows... I'd highly recommend any of the Cirque du Soleil shows.

The grand circle is basically a tour of all the interesting stuff around the four corners, Southern Utah/Grand Escalante area of SW USA. A map is available from tourist info offices (picked one up at a hotel at the Grand Canyon). Places to visit include: Grand Canyon, Bryce Canyon, Zion Nat pk, Bryce canyon, Capitol reef nat pk, Canyonlands, Arches, Mesa Verde, Monument valley, Canyon de Chelly, Four corners monument and the Silverton to Durango railway. Fantastic!
