I travelled to New York with BUNAC in 1998 to work at a summercamp in NY and CT. They arranged the first nights accommodation in the NY youth hostel. I then had to make my own way to the summercamp as BUNAC bodged the details up. My experience of BUNAC was mixed. The first summercamp was awful and I had to travel back to New York to get somewhere else sorted which was touch and go.The second summercamp in CT was fnatastic and in the end I did enjoy the experience. New York itself is fantastic but I would not recommend staying in the Youth Hostel as I found it unbearably hot in the summer as no air conditioning, its noisy and the staff are somewhat brisk.
Make sure you get good contact details of the BUNAC team at the youth hostel, so you can access their help if you need it.
hope you enjoy New York, it is amazing.

I stayed in NY 2 summers ago. The Whitehouse Hotel (really a hostel) is about $15 a night and does long stay rates. The staff will also help find jobs/other accomodation. Rooms are partitioned so you get more privacy than in other hostels. Location is on the Bowery - lots of students, a bit scary at night. There is a web site where you can book but I dont have the address - sorry.
First of all New York is amazing and you will have a wicked time. I was there last summer, and though I don't know much about long-term accomodation, if you need a hostel to stay at for a while Chelsea Center Hostel (http://www.chelseacenterhostel.com/) was a comfortable though basic place to stay. I stayed in the East Village location which was easy to get to by subway. The staff were also very friendly and helpful and there was no curfew. The hostel was also a lot more secure than others i've stayed at.
Hope this helps :-)

Remember that when checking into hostels that it never hurts to ask for a discount for being a BUNAC member. And not many hostels care for the HI membership. Its unnecessary.
I worked in a camp in wisconsin in 1999 through Bunac and I found they were excellent. They arranged everything, met me at airports, allowed me to change my flights with no hassle, I travelled around the US and Canada afterwards and it was the best thing I ever did. I met so many people, I was lucky to meet people that I only paid for 3 nights accomadation all summer!New York is amazing. Bunac were very good, just go with your instincts and have a great time.
