hi there, a few years ago i travelled from vegas to san fran then down the west coast,i only had about 2 days to do the trip and didnt go all the way to l.a. Some of the places i would recommend is first off santa cruz, its where the lost boys was filmed and has a great atmosphere, was extremely hot when i went. then i went to montery and carmel, which were lovely little towns, i think there's a scenic drive from one to the other. all the places i went to were realy nice and i could so have spent longer in some of them. r.e. the money thing, i picked up a coupon booklet from the tourist office at the pier in san fran, thank god cause some of the places we stayed were quite expensive, and it kept the cost down. i owuld definately reshearch where u want to go and where to stay as by the time i got to places i just took whatever accom i could find, which isnt ideal if your on a budget. there was also a place (sorry cant remember where) that had massive seals along the coast, they were amazing and one of the highlights of our trip, the scenery is spectacular and i would love to go back and spend more time in some of the small towns. ive found this site that might be of help http://www.roadtripusa.com/coastal_west_coast/california_coast.html good luck with your trip, hope u have a blast

You'll need to rent a car (don't say hire in the US ;) ) as public transport isn't geared up for sightseeing on the route.
The drive from San francisco to LA is great fun. As mentioned by the other poster Santa Cruz is vibrant as it's a university town although like seaside resorts in this country it's pretty dead out of season. On to Monterey and check out the aquarium then do 17 mile drive around the coast (and Pebble beach golf club)taking a look at sea otters on the way. Carmel is lovely, go for a pint at the Hogs breath Inn, formerly owned by Clint Eastwood and have a look around the art shops. Next stop the picturesque Big sur and onwards to San Simeon and Hurst castle and Morro bay. Now the Icing on the cake, Santa Barbara, simply lovely place but also great for bars in the evening. Drive to Santa Monica and while there rent a bike on the beach and cycle down to Venice beach. Santa monica is also a great place to jump on a tour bus to Universal studio's.
Have a great time, and if you want more info, just ask :)
