I'd suggest taking a train especially if you need to be someplace by a certain time. You can check out Amtrak (the national train service) routes online and make reservations somewhat easily prior to arriving in the US which is always a good idea as you'll be able to enjoy yourself more without having to worry about making arrangements right after getting off the plane. Amtrak goes to most major cities many times working its way through areas you won't see if you travel by the major highways or take a plane. I would suggest not taking an overnight route as the sleeping and dining facilities on US trains is going to feel somewhat primitive compared to European and some Asian and South American lines.

How much time do you have? If you're in a hurry and don't mind seeing nothing of the USA at all, check out their low-cost airlines such as Jet Blue on www.jetblue.com - which has a route from New York JFK to Long Beach (near LA) - or South West Airlines on www.southwest.com .
On the other hand, if you have plenty of time, you could try delivering a car from one side of the country to the other - take a look at www.autodriveaway.com - or, if you'd prefer an organised tour, check out Trek America. Other options include Amtrak (see above) or Greyhound buses. Greyhound sometimes do good season ticket deals if you check them out before you go. Have a great time! Pete |
