We are stopping in Houston for a couple of nights and would like to hire a car while we are there. Neither of us have driven in America before and would like to hear from anyone with tips, or knows of any websites that can basically teach us the rules of the road in the USA. We feel it would be better to go prepared than practising on the real thing!

I'm British but have driven thousands of miles in the USA. I doubt if you'll have any problems at all in driving in the US. Your rental car will almost certainly be an automatic so will be easy to drive. American roads tend to be wide, straight and well-marked. American drivers tend to be more courteous than we Brits, and driving is generally slower and saner than we're used to. However, their signposting, though plentiful, can be a bit confusing till you get used to it - they tend to signpost by direction and highway number (eg "Hwy 16 S) rather than destination, so make sure you have good maps. In general, though, I don't think you'll find driving in the States too difficult at all. Have a good trip!

Thanks Peter, that makes me feel better about it. Our party has now grown to six, including my mother so I am sure I am going to have lots of advice!
