Ok this is one thing (and about the only thing) thats not really covered in the USA rough guide. I'm going to the Us in june and am flying into chicago and hoping to travel around canada, new england, NY, washington and all the areas in between ending in atlanta to stay with friends. however my current dilema is how to get around, as a lot of canada (places like national parks etc) seems to be best explored by car that is my first choice. However me and my partner are only 19 (we both have full UK driving licences for almost 2 years completely clean) no-one with wither rent us a car or let us use driveaway cars. So i thought about buying a car, with amtrak/greyhound passes looking at least £1000 between us for the time were out there i thought this may be a good option.
I'm just wondering if anyone has any or knows any good sources of information about buying and driving in the us, where to buy, insurance, tax etc.

Did you have much joy?? I can only guess you've been and come back home by now. If so - what did you find out about buying a car in America? If you did go and now know more than you did before, please, please reply - i would also like to know about insurance etc....
