I'm going to New York next week. Although I'm happy to take the bus or train, my companion wants to take a taxi from Newark Airport to Manhattan (53rd St at 6th Ave). How much can we expect the taxi fare to be? (Two of us plus baggage.) Should we agree a fare in advance with the driver, or is it normally done on the meter? Thanks in advance!
Fares are always agreed before you leave at the airport.
We stayed on 51st street and the fare was $60 plus $1 per bag. Don't forget to add the 20% tip on top of that too.
There is a shuttle bus that will take you as far as Grand Central Station and then you can get another bus to your destination for the all inclusive fare of $15 plus £1 per bag. Yes, you have to change, but you do get delivered to your door and it's much cheaper!

I'm from the area and have flown into Newark many times and one suggestion is do not go with taxi drivers that approach you! There will be a taxi stand where legitamate taxis stop and they should give you a good fare. I know you said your companion doesn't want to do the train, but from Newark, there is a monorail and train service to Penn Station, it is pretty convenient, and you can take a cab much cheaper from Penn Station NYC, than from Newark, NJ. ALso if you do takte the train be aware there are 2 penn stations. 1 in NJ, where the airport is, and the final stop (the one you want!!!!) in New York.
Thanks for this, Brandon. In fact we didn't bother with the taxis and took the monorail/train to NYC Penn, just as you recommended. We then took the subway to our final destination in Manhattan. It was fine, pretty quick and much cheaper than a taxi!
that's good that you wound up goign the cheaper way. I just realized, that I didn't realize when i responded how long ago you had actually asked the question.....february?
Taxis are now $60+ tolls+ tip= about $80.00 to midtown East ONE WAY. You can take a bus that is about as fast considering all the traffic for about $14.00-you get the bus back to the airport on 41st st just past Grand Central Station. Walk down (from 50th) Lexington to 41st, take a right, and look for the bus stop and store to buy the ticket on the left hand side of the street.
