How long have you got, are you flying in and out of LAX, and I assume you are renting a car?

Been there, done that, bought the T'Shirt. Can give you a good route if you have 4 weeks and a car to play with, and I can tell you what the highlights for me were. We stayed in cheap motels so can't comment on hostels.

I am planning on doing a very similar trip in november as the first leg of a round the world but i have a problem: car hire.

I am currently 23 and so i am having massive amounts of daily surcharges added on top of my online quotes.

eg. quote around $500 then plus $20 per day for 25(ish) days = $500 + $500 = $1000!!!

this is well over my budget but i cant find a hire company that won't charge these hidden extras for under 25s.

can anybody help?

Have you tried AVIS? I think they rent to people under 25.

Yeah I had a look. the problem is that although they will rent to under 25s, they slap on an extra surcharge of $25 per day. when you are renting for over 3 weeks this more than doubles the cost.

I am trying to find out if anyone knows of any car rental companies that do not charge this extra (or possibly that only charge a very small amount) for drivers under 25.

Thanks anyway.

LA, wellu have to do the Hollywood stuff, but thats reali all its worth doing. I drove from LA to San fran via Big SUr and the coast, and even tho it was very long, it was incredibly beautiful, so if ur up for nice scenery go for it. San Fran is fab - i reali recommend a boat cruise, but wear sun tan lotion, i burnt to a crisp. AS for Las Vegas, i havent been there, but San DIego, wow. It is amazing, if u do nothing else go to the zoo. From San Diego back to LA, we went via Joshua Tree National Park, a long drive, thru the desert and Palm Springs, but again so worth it. Hope this helps. I did this trip 3 weeks ago, and i have never not wanted to come home as much as i did then, have an amazing time, hope this helps.
