I've seen people travel with a guitar on a plane, and it wasn't pretty. A guitar case is twice the size of a recommended carry-on, but if you check it with the regular luggage, it will arrive in several pieces. Some planes have special storage areas for oversized carry-ons. The best thing to do is call the airline and ask if you can carry it on. You should have no problems in customs, just the usual photographing and fingerprinting that the U.S. government insists on doing to all tourists/terrorists.
