Question:
I have a month off (October)and around £1000 to travel round America. Where do people suggest I go? (I am a 28 year old female travelling alone) Should I stick to one region or attempt to fit in as much as I can? Is my budget realistic and is it true that you have to book hostels in advance?
I would appreciate any hints, tips or comments
Thanks

Can you be more specific about your interests? For example, are you interested in seeing some of the United States' big cities like Chicago, New York, LA? Or are you interested in seeing some of the older historical parts of the US like Boston, NY, Philidelphia, DC? Or are you more interested in seeing some amazing nature like the redwood forests or the grand canyon.

Everyone has there own opinion about the best way to see the country. Really, it depends on what you'll want to do. If you can be a bit more specific, then perhaps you can get better answers.

I would definitely like to see some of the cities, New York, Boston, San Francisco, Seattle (although I know I should probably do either east or West). However, I would also like to fit in some more scenic areas and get in a bit of walking if possible. I am interested in historical sites/museums and also, music, literature and food. As this will be my first time to the states, I am open to trying/seeing anything and am just looking for some ideas.

Amtrak offer a 30 day rail pass which will allow you to travel on any train in the US or Canada - and last week this was £300!

The only problem is the journeys are long and you do have to make one trip into Canada - but I've looked at doing this as part of a round the world tour and i'm, planning New York to Montreal (via boston), montreal to toronto, then to chicago (via niagara falls), chicago to seattle on the empire builder, and then down the west coast. It looks feasible, though it will be very much a major sights only tour.

Also, have a look at hostel.com and they can advise you on cheap hostels for everywhere. US seems to work out at about £16/ night.

Also, check out green turtle tours who offer tailor made packages on sleeper buses.

Good luck, and let me know how it goes as i'm planning this for next feb.
