I was looking for some advice on travelling to New York for a few days around St Patricks Day, does anyone know if all the tourist sites are really busy around then? and would we be better off going another time

St Patrick’s is a fun time in New York but, yes, it is always a busy time… during the parade you can pretty much write off doing anything else touristy as streets are shut/blocked etc.
Also you may find that accommodation is more expensive at this time – although obviously that depends on your budget and your concerns… If you’re looking for somewhere cheaper than hotels, try booking hostels here.
But whenever you go, I’m sure you’ll love New York City – it truly is amazing!
