I've heard that there's no public transport in the region outside of the summer months. Does anyone know if this is so and if there's any other means of getting around without a car? Any other tips about visiting the area would also be much appreciated.
If anyone's travelling around The States in March, fancy hooking up? |

There's virtually no public transportation in California, or in much of the States, outside of the larger cities. You basically have to rent a car or hook-up with somebody who has one. I've lived in California most of my life, and i couldn't imagine travelling around without a car. You could take Greyhound, but you'll miss just about everything except the large cities.

Hi,
I also live in CA.. Big Sur is beautiful but I wouldn't know how to visit it without a car. It is one long road, the 1, and everything thing is miles apart. Though.. now that I think about it I met a guy on a campsite when I visited last time in November and he had come by bike. I think he lived on the campsite, had a long story about how his bike broke down and had to walk everything. But.. I wouldn't recomend this. There _are_ a lot of bikers in Big Sur but think about it, look on a map .. it is a very long stretch with almost nothing. Maybe you could think about going to the Mendocino Coast. Different from Big Sur but also beautiful! Have a nice holiday! |

It's really all about a road trip by car, I can't see how it would be enjoyable any other way. We did San Francisco to Santa Monica via Santa Cruz, Carmel (17 mile drive) San Simeon (Hurst Castle) and Santa Barbara.
