I'm travelling from the UK to San Fran in April and need help from some SF natives.

What the weather will be like then? I want to travel light so what are the key pieces of clothing I'll need?
What are your top 10 must see/do while I'm there?
My trip is for 10 days, how realistic is it to fit trips to Yosemite and Napa Valley? Am I trying to do too much in a short space of time?
And finally..... tell me something about the city that only a native would know; recommend somewhere to eat that's not touristy and where can I find the best prices for clothing/cosmetics?

Thanks in advance.

Hi!

I lived for three years in SF and loved it. 10 days is a good amount of time - you'll be able to fit in Napa and Yosemite, if you plan well.

As for weather, SF is highly unpredictable, so prepare to layer. I usually wore jeans/pans, a long sleeved shirt, and something over it. The city gets cool at night. You won't need a parka, but a nice jacket is welcome. Bring an umbrella in case of showers, but most likely you'll be fine.

The best fun little place to eat is actually in Ghiradelli Square (They have another location in Hayes Valley that's a bit out of the way but less touristy). It's called Frijtz, and it's belgian-style crepes and fries with divine dips. (Jalapeno Katsup is my favorite!).

For a nice, fairly pricey meal, the Grand Cafe off Union square can't be beat. I've eaten there several times and it's just wonderful.

Fun, local shopping can be found on Fillmore Street. Take the 38 Geary from downtown about 10 minutes and get off by the historic Fillmore theater. (live music and concerts - try to catch a show if you can). Walk up the hill for great local shopping... there are some excellent resale shops offering great prices on funky designer duds.

Also, great cafes on this street, and only locals go there.

Sundays are good for renting rollerblades and visiting Golden Gate Park and Haight/Ashbury... you'll see a ton of people out.

For cheap cosmetics, stick to chain drug stores like Walgreens. There's an excellent Sephora flagship store just north of Market St. in the Union Square area, and also a good makeup department at the main Macy's store.

Have a blast! I miss SF! :-)
