I'm gonna be making a 3 month roadtrip with a good friend of mine through the USA. I've been looking into hiring but we're considering buying a car.

Now what I want to know is the following; can you buy a car in say; LA and resell it in NY? And/or is it too difficult doing that on your own without the help of a bonafide company?
For instance; is there an authority that has a list of all the requirements (insurance and stuff) that you need, to buy and drive a car legally?

If you have any information about this, it'be great if you took the time to write it down. And if you have any other suggestions I haven't thought of; that would be great too! (I already know about driveaway)

I think buying could be a minefield. Just registering it for a start (as you don't have a USA address), then getting cheap insurance and also hoping you don't get fleeced. It's hard enough buying a car in your own country! For peace of mind I think renting is the answer. They'll do deals for long term rentals.
