I highly recommend the Fung Wah bus which goes from Chinatown in Boston to Chinatown in NYC. An unbeatable $10 one way. I took it a couple months ago and it was a great- nice bus and about a 3 1/2- 4 hr trip. I didn't make a reservation, the ticket office is in a little restaurant, get there a little early and you won't have trouble. Buses leave frequently.
Happy Trails! erin

Hi,

Why do you want a hostel close to JFK? So you can get a bus to Boston? I would actually recommend you go into Manhattan and find a hostel there. Especially if you take the Chinatown route that was suggested. There is a train from JFK that takes you direct to the subway and then you can easily get anywhere in NY - the subway is excellent and cheap.

I stayed in Wanderers Inn West but I wouldn't recommend this as it is too far away from everything. Look on HostelWorld.com, they give a good idea of what to expect. Like I say, go for one in Manhattan (south side of Central Park), that way you will be close to Chinatown and some of the sights. A friend of mine stayed in one near Times Square which was apparently very good.

Hope this helps!

I would also suggest taking a bus into NY and getting the bus to Boston. You do not have to go all the way to chinatown to pick up a "chinatown" bus. Take a look at the link below to see all of your options

The Fung Wa bus is pretty cheap, sometimes it catches fire and burns up though!

Bonanza Bus Company goes between Boston and New York City, their tel. number is 617-720-4110.

Greyhound may still make runs too, their number is 617-526-1800. Not sure about this company.

There are scheduled trains between New York and Boston, all the way up and down the east coast for that matter, the company is AMTRAK. AMTRAK is on the web, with fares and times, www.amtrak.com.
Hostelling International-American Youth Hostels Inc. may be able to provide accomodations. They are at 617-779-0900.

Between Boston and Providence there is another local train service that runs pretty good. (Also much cheaper than using the bus companies.) You may be able to find cheaper accomodation outside of Boston and use this local train service (called the "T") to get you around. For more info on local train service contact the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Transportation Authority, better known as the MBTA. (Web address: www.mbta.com.)
Boston also has an a fairly reliable subway for getting around the city. Part of the "T" system.

Good luck.
