I'm competing in a triathlon in SF in early June and am looking for somewhere to chill out for a week beforehand. Ideally somewhere along the Pacific coast close to SF - any ideas anyone?
Cheers!

The hi ayh website does not list all hostels in San Francisco. You are better checking complete list at http://www.hostelhandbook.com
Most independent hostels are the same price or cheaper then ayh and they have fewer restrictions on curfew and drinking. r

Since accomodation in San Fran is high, staying just outside in Oakland or Berkeley and taking the BART train in is my suggestion. From there you can do fabulous day trips.

Take a look into Monterey, CA. about 2 hrs south. Beautiful coastline and they have a fabulous aquarium. And Carmel right next door where the rich holiday.

Or if you are a wine officionado, or just love scenic drives, North of San Fran to Napa Valley and Sonoma Valleys might be for you.

Cheers!

i am from SF. there is a hostel in
south of market area called Globe Hostel
and there is also a YHA? at Fort Mason
which is stunning location on the bay. they
are cheap. the best cheap hotel (SF is
expensive) is Hotel Remo in North Beach
and that is about $60/night. the hstels are
about $20 i guess. i lived there so no need.

monterey is overrated in my book. go north
over GG Bridge on hwy towards stinson
beach or go to other parts of marin for hiking
or mountain bkg. stay away from mkt street-dirty and lots of beggars. get the local gaurdian paper (free) and check out whats going on . lots of dive bars and great restaurants in the mission district.

try to stay in SF if you can cause you can go out late. BART does go over to berkeley but it
stops at midnigt i think.

SF, NY, New Orleans are my favorite US cities. SF has nature also.

cheers
