I would recommend you spend about two or three days driving up the coast of Lake Michigan in Michigan. Make sure you stop at Sleeping Bear Dunes. When you go over the Mackinac Bridge, you might want to make a day-trip to Mackinac Island. It's touristy, but a worthwhile stop. If you can, drive to the north coast of Michigan's Upper Peninsula and check out Lake Superior. If not, the drive along the south coast (at Lake Michigan) is lovely too. Escanaba is the only town of substance in the southern U.P., though you don't want to come to this area for the towns. You could spend another two or three days in the U.P. Then it's back down through Wisconsin. I'm afraid I don't know much about this part, but it takes up to five or six hours driving from Escanaba to Chicago without stopping, so I'm sure you can do the whole loop in ten days with lots of stops. Camping is the best option for accommodation - you really want to get the most out of this area's natural beauty.
