I am travelling by car with 2 kids between friends in Washington and Kingston,Ontario and I am trying to find somewhere for an overnight stopover that might also allow a couple of hours of interesting diversion to break up a long journey.

I have seen a website for Steamtown Historic site but am not sure if it's an enthusiasts only place or suitable for only vaguely interested tourists. Does anyone know this place or can suggest an alternative stopover?

I suppose the Steamtown to which you refer is the one in Scranton, PA, which I visited about ten years ago. It is a good place for a stopover if you are driving on Interstate Route 87 through Scranton, but I would not go far out of my way to go there unless I were very interested in historical trains.

I have no idea where in Ontario Kingston is located, but if your route takes you anywhere near Niagara Falls that would be a great place to stop over, especially with children.
