I recently travelled to Hawaii and stayed at Budget type accommodation, I strongly suggest, except for the VERY hard core backpackers that the Banana Bungalow be avoided, the bathrooms are updated but very dirty and the rooms are pokey and depressing and it is miles from anywhere (Wailuku), public transport is very rare and you would need to hire a car to have a good look around. A great place to stay was the Sunseeker Resort in Kihei on the opposite side of the Island, very nice and great price, own bathroom, kitchen etc and across the road from the beach and near shops etc.

Happy Travels!

I wish I had seen your post before I booked at Banana Bungalow based on the Rough Guide recommendation. I have traveled to many many hostels both in the US and Europe and this was hands down the worst I have ever seen. (In fact it rivaled places in eastern Turkey) It was filthy, bad sanitation, rude and unhelpful staff, not conveniently located and did not feel in the least safe. DO NOT GO there unless you are completely a thrill seeker - and even then there are real and exhilerating thrills to be had in Maui that are much better than the Banana Bungalow.
