Can anyone give me any information about trail riding (on horseback)in the US? I'm particularly interested in following historical trails but I'm having problems finding relevant information; ie how much of the trails still exist & whether or not is riding is permitted on them.

Do a Search for the American Quarter Horse Assiciation (AQHA) and that should give you a list of members with websites. Many of those should have information on who offers trail rides and locations. It may take a while to find exactly what you are looking for but that is the largest horse owners association in the Nation.
