A few of my friends and I from the UK are going to toronto this June and would like to fit in a trip to New York (just a idea). Anyone have ideas on how best to do this...(on a shoe string budget of course).

Flights and buses seem very expensive (best I can see is $180 per person)...other option is hirering a car, cheaper....but how does that work with crossing the border and is it a realistic option.

Would apprecaite some advice from those in the know.

Much appreciated!

D

P.S Ignore the poll...posted on the worng thing...good start eh!

Hi,

You can easily catch the train from Toronto to New york, the train goes via Niagara falls as well which is a bonus.

You can book online at http://www.viarail.ca/

Renting a car (you don't say hire in the USA! ) is an option but the car will be a liability once you get to the city. Crossing the border is easy but a little time consuming as you will have to go into the Customs office for a photograph and your fingerprints taken.

I would guess a coach would be the cheapest option http://www.greyhound.ca/

Greyhound bus costs ard US$100 while viarail costs about the same.

Cheapest may be by car where you can rent a car for $30 per day for eg. from ACE and Discount car companies and return car back to NY branch.

In return for highest cost by bus and rail, you get better rest and certainty of reaching your destination! There are pros and cons to the different modes so you have to weigh it out.

Cheers guys,

Much appreciated - the train and the buses are turning out to be over $200 per person...the saver fairs seem to be sold out. Think may just wait till we're in toronto and see what the prices are like.

If not, then the car is always last minute option - just to be prepared, was wondering if any of you have done the trip - please send through your tips....routes to take, attractions to see along the way, etc....we plan to go through Niagra Falls (makes sence eh).

Cheers again

D
