I'm gearing up for a 4 or 5 month trip in Central and South America and I've gotta admit the geek in me is none too pleased with being far from my own computer for that long. I've got digital camera, a weblog, and long list of friends and family I'd like to keep e-mailing from the road.
I understand that there are internet cafes all along the way, which is great, but unfortunately I don't know how I'll be able to upload my pictures off my camera to an ftp server for safe-keeping from one. Futhermore, I'd love to be able to write for my weblog, or a electronic diary, from a little beach cabana somewhere, and upload it next time I'm near an internet connection without retyping it all into a gmail account but don't know how that'd be possible. I've got a little computer, a 12" powerbook.. so part of me is tempted to bring it. But then, of course, are all of the myriad troubles with carrying a heavy, expensive, delicate and stealable piece of gear. Is it stupid to even consider it? How do other long term travelers deal with digital cameras and such? Is there wifi often? An idea I've been kicking around is to get some sort of PDA with a detachable folding keyboard... that'd be small and convienent but I don't know if it would work either. I'd still need to install Palm software to sync at internet cafes which might be difficult to do at commercial places. Anyone have any suggestions or thoughts? ~M |

Hi,
What you always can do is burn you photo´s on a disc. This is almost everywhere possible. Dont forget to take your cable with you. An other option is upload your photo´s to a company near to your house where somebody can pick them up. In holland we have companies where you can send them to trough their website and they develop them. In this case you are sure that you never going to loose your photo´s if they nick your camera or your CD get scratched. I wont recommend taking your laptop with you. Their are many internet shops and if you have a place where you can upload them to they defenitly want to help you with that. Wouter Learn Spanish in Mexico |
