A good bet is to NOT be out drinking with other students, unless they agree to just speak in Español.

Hey-
I've been here foir a few weeks so am happy to give some tips. as a female, after about 10, you should try to take taxis or tuk-tuks home, unless it is very close. Antigua is safer than most of Guatemala, but sh-- does go down, and I did get mugged. Most of the tour agencies are retailers for the same service, i.e. they'll all refer people to teh same buses that go to the beach. so just check around for price. Silva travel on 5a ave at least has a nice staff. If you need a hotel for a coupel of nights and want a private bath, check out Posada Lazos Fuertes on the Santa Lucia avenue (7832-9436). It's got a good price, nice staff, and they donate all of their profits to charity. I stayed at a few places here, but this is far and away the best. They have a fantastic 4th floor balcony with views of the entire town. For places to go out, if you have any interest in learning spanish, avoid places like Mono Loco or Cafe 2000. It is mini-america. Check out places like La sala instead... Hope ths helps.. |
