I'm planning on traveling from Guatemala City to Belize. The cost of flying to Belize is a little more than $1,000 CDN...way over my budget. Does anyone know how much it costs to travel by bus? It has to be a whole lot cheaper than flying. I understand the bus ride is approximately 8 hours.

Is it safe for me to bus it alone to Belize? Do I need to be concerned about anything? Borders? Please note I'm a single female most likely traveling alone.

Sorry for the delay. Your best bet is to bus to Flores and see Tikal. Presuming that you don't have time for more there, then you could hop a bus to Belize.

I prefer the overnight buses to Flores, but it is best to not be in front near the driver and assistant noise.

I lived in Barrios for 4 months. If you don't want to go to tikal, and it might save you some money, bus to Barrios, and catch a boat up to Punta Gorda, Belize. When i was in Guatemala two years ago, the bus from the Capital to Barrios was about 40 quetzales and took about 5-6 hours. I'd only suggest this if you're wanting something a little more adventurous than Greyhounds and bottled water. Be careful, and have fun.
