My friend and I are trying to plan a way to get from one end of Mexico to another. Ariving by bus at California or Texas and going to Guatamala. We will have bicycle and touring gear and would like to tour part way and do either bus, train or hitch-hike the rest. We are finding it difficult to find out anything about booking or fares. One idea is to do Baja California and catch a ferry to Mazatlan (from La Paz) But we don't know how much this will cost either!! If you know or know how we can find out please respond. We would also like to find out about the cost of basics down there (food, hostels) is it the same as the rest of North America?

You'll find food, accommodation etc cheap compared to the States. Check out the RG or Lonely Planet travel guides for more details.

I am a bike lover, but Mexico is not the best place to travel on bike, especially using the bus as portage. Much of Mexico is mountainous, with narrow roads and impatient drivers. Bus drivers sometimes give customers hassles about large or bulky luggage (like bikes) and are really just soliciting bribes (mordidas). There's more to Mexico than just another place to ride your bike.
