Can anyone offer advice on whether hiking boots are needed for Costa Rica please? I'm going next week and wondering whether boots or trail shoes will do the job. Planning to go to the forests, volcanoes, etc.

Although I haven't been to CR in years, I can probably help. Whether on a seven day jungle trek or climbing a volcano in Guatemala, I like comfortable and light hiking boots. But I've seen people wear sneakers. Probably the main thing is to be comfortable.
