Hey,
my girlfriend and I are getting married next year and we would like to go to Mexico for our honeymoon. I've read that the country does allow same-sex civil unions but that there's also a lot of social intolerance. Are public displays of affection accepted ? Will we be able to walk hand in hand , give the occasional kiss, etc ? Any advice would be most welcome !! |

you're right, they aren't very tolerant... but i found that Xalapa (or Jalapa) in the state of Veracruz is more tolerant than most. Its a very artsy town with a strong art school, which tends to attract more liberal minded people.
I'm not sure how the older people would react to public displays of affection but i know that the younger generation is much more accepting. While you're there, be sure to check out the museum of anthropology, the theater (i hear its fantastic), and callejon de diomantes (sp?)... its in the center of town and attracts a lot of the local hippies selling their jewelry... they are great people with beautiful jewelry |

Altough straight myself, I have many Mexican gay friends living in Mexico.
Mexico City is pretty gay friendly (in places) and Puerto Vallarta on the pacific Coast is, of course, the famous gay getaway. Si, se puede |

In general, I've found the Mayan people to be very tolerant of alternate lifestyles. For example, in Telchac Puerto, a little fishing village on the coast in the state of Yucatan, there is a transvestite flower-seller who everyone simply knows as "Pauline". I think you would be quite comfortable anywhere on the Yucatan peninsula.
