On a whim I bought a ticket for Guatemala yesterday leaving in a little over a week. Anyways here's my question...help!? I've done no research to speak of, I'll be on a very limited budget, and I am a woman travelling alone. I'm taking all suggestions. Where should I go, where should I avoid? How can I stay in Antigua for the holy week celebrations for relatively cheap in a place that I can reserve a place now or might not be booked when I get there? How about a language school for a week or two (My working spanish is on the beginner intermediate side) I really haven't a clue what it is I want or need to know, but hopefully someone out there does! Thanks.

I'm sure you'll love Guatemala. Most travellers are overwhelmed by the natural beauty of the countryside and the warmth of the people. Anyway, a bit of practical advice (I'm assuming you've already bought a guidebook). Head for Antigua to start with, and enrol for a week or so of Spanish, so you'll meet a few people and be able to brush up on the language. It's a stunning town - loaded with cafes, bars and restaurants - and an easy place to start to get to grips with the country. Depending on how long you plan to stay in Antigua, most people head to Atitlán lake or Monterrico beach for a weekend at some time during their stay - both are great places to get away from Antigua. It really depends on you, what you decide to do with the rest of your trip. If you have a Rough Guide then you'll see the places I rate highly. Perhaps the two real prerequisites are a trip to Tikal and some time in the highlands (I'd recommend the Ixil area or Todos Santos). Feel free to post any more messages if you need any extra advice. Buen viaje! Iain |
