I want to warn travelers away from the Midas Resort in San Ignacio, Belize, which is featured in many guidebooks. Our cabana was not secure; it was at the end of the line of cabanas, near the river; no security watched over the area. There was a low outbuilding attached to our cabana, which made it easy for someone to climb on its roof and smash our window. They stole most of everything we had left in our locked room, on our first day. My bag was locked and they took the entire thing, and also sorted through our other unlocked bags. We hadn't left items of great value, but having all your clothes stolen is a big drag. The manager was completely unhelpful and unapologetic. We changed hotels immediately and over the next three days kept trying to find the owner of the hotel, but were continually stonewalled each time we asked. When we returned we sent her an email and she never wrote back.

I'm sorry that you've had such a bad experience there. I've been a guest at Midas now for awhile. Just to be fair, they are now under new management and ownership. I believe that it was a crazy english couple running the place back then. Now it's run by a mother and her son, Maria and Michael Preston. I've personally seen them go WAY out of their way to help people. The place is secure and management now lives on the property.
