I want to post a strong warning about a hotel I stayed in recently in Mexico City.
The Hotel Juarez is in the Zocalo, just off Avenida Cinco de Mayo and it’s listed in The Rough Guide. I was there for a week and during my entire stay was pestered by one of the guys who work there. With hindsight I should have left immediately, but anyway… Every day he’d ask me out, call my room, knock on my door in the morning, ask me to breakfast and of course make the obligatory clumsy pass. Because I had rebuffed his numerous advances, he followed me one evening and while I was out went into my room and stole my passport, money, travellers’ cheques and credit cards, causing me all sorts of problems. Granted, I hadn’t used the safe, but my valuables were well hidden and it didn’t take me long to work out what had happened. I thought the hotel management might help me clear things up, but they didn’t even alert the police. In fact they protected him and accused me of lying. He then proceeded to make a series of pathetic and utterly transparent excuses/alibis. This is a strong warning to not stay at this hotel, especially if you’re a female travelling alone. This guy (his name is Gabriel) still works there as far as I know and I’ve heard since that he has pestered lone women staying there before. He is potentially dangerous and the hotel management is complicit in his behaviour by protecting him. I don’t think this hotel deserves any custom. I did manage to still have a great time in Mexico and met some lovely, friendly people who helped me hugely when I needed it most. The same cannot be applied to the Hotel Juarez – you have been warned. |
