People have camped there, but you could just rent hammocks with mosquito nets that are already set up at the Jaguar Inn for $7 each and not be having to haul a tent on your trip.

That web page might be useful for someone who is driving in and who does not care about camping at all.
It is also misleading, in that it suggests that there is a market in Flores, when it is in Santa Elena.

As far as I know, the campground is safe. If you leave things lying around, they would likely disappear. You might want to have at least one flashlight to be able to move around after dark without crashing into things.
Unless a person is really really going to either get up early to watch the sunrise or wander in late to see the sunset from one of the ruins, I think Flores is a lot better. There you can drink a cold beer while watching a sunset over Lake Peten Itza.
You can also spend the night at and see part of nearby Uaxactun, and have an excellent seat on the 6 AM chicken bus for viewing jungle while coming back in the morning. There is also a small but impressive museum at Campamento El Chiclero, where the food is also great.
Either place will have more nightlife and cheaper cold beer than Tikal, though I wouldn't head to Uaxactun for the nightlife.
El Remate sounds okay, but I have never stayed there. It doesn't sound like there is any way to sip a beer and watch sunset over the lake.
