Most hotels you can book online are not cheap. You really need to invest in a guide book. Rough Guide or LP are best in my mind.

You can get a work visa for some job you can do that no local Mexicans can do. It helps to have some special skills. Maybe you can work under the table for less than the minimum wage of (I think) $6 a day, but good luck living on it.
