Has anyone taken spanish classes in Antigua? Would you recommend taking classes there? If so which school would you recommend? What was your experience like there? Did you stay with a host family or at hotel? Would you recommend staying at a hotel or with a family? and Why? Aproximate costs?

Does anyone have any suggestions on things to do in antigua?

I was thinking about taking Spanish classes during the day for about 4hrs/day for one week. I figured it would give me some time in the afternoon to go check things out.

I will be in antigua in the middle of april, so if someone can help me decide I'd really appreciate that. Thanks a lot for helping me out.

There are a lot of spanish schools in Antigua I think maybe even a 100 anyways there are a lot. I think a lot of them can set you up with families to live with that is the cheapes way to go.

You might do well to take a look at www.123teachme.com for assessments of schools there and other places. Antigua is not exactly a Spanish-immersion environment, though. If you hang out with the turistas at night, you could be wasting your time. Whatever you choose, don't prepay more than a week at a time.

Hi I am in Antigua now, and will be until the end of may. I agree that it is not the total immersion experience, but I have to say I am using a fair amount. We always speak spanish at home with the host family, who are rally chatty and I quickly lost my inhibitions. The night life and communications are great, and I think it{s a great place to start, especially if you haven{t done a lot of travelling before. Granted there are a lot of tourists, but there are also a lot of locals more than happy to chat away in the local lingo for the evening. If anyone else is here get in touch! For a series of excellent articles on the subject, check out Transitions Abroad. It helped a friend of mine find an excellent school in Antigua:

Proyecto Lingüístico Francisco Marroquín (PLFM)

Also check out:
