I am so excited to visit Guatemala. I have a month there and then I move on but I really want to take a Spanish course and also see the country. My delema is whether I should take a two week course in one area and then second two course somewhere else. I really want to experience the culture and meet the locals. If anyone has any advice that would be great!

I don't get it. You have a whole month in Guatemala and you are even considering spending it all in Spanish classes somewhere?
The best way to learn any language is to use it. Start now with a course of tapes from the library, so you can get more out of what class time you take. Don't go to classes in Antigua or Xela, where it will be too tempting to hang out with other tourists. Also, Antigua is a bit bland after a couple of days. Take a look at 123teachme.comrelCountryID=2 for ideas on where to go and school quality. I think a home stay in Huehue or San Andres would give you a good intro to the locals. Don't pay for more than one week at a time. If you don't like the school or the teacher, there will be no refunds and it is no problem to extend a good one-on-one class. There is a lot to see in the highlands and Peten Department. I suggest dividing your time between the two, maybe with more for the north, because of so much to see right across the border in Belize as well. Have a great trip! |
