I will be in southern Mexico and Central America this summer. A few purchases will be made by credit card. I seem to recall that Mastercard is not well-liked in this region, nor is American Express. Is this still the fact? Should I stick with VISA?

I have a Mastercard credit card and a Visa debit card. I don't recall any problems with either in recent trips to Guatemala. I haven't been in Mexico for several years, but I don't recall any problems there either.
The biggest problem I have had is with the idea of paying a surcharge on a credit card. Thus, I generally use the debit card to get cash to spend. |

Mayaphile is right, Mastercard is now just as widely accepted as Visa. I found Cirrus/Plus debit cards worked well on my last trip too.
