I am planning a trip in March/ April and having a problem pin pointing things that I would like to include and see. there are so many books and things that I think i might like, but all seem a bit obvious. I do want to do some of the bigger touristy things but would like to include some things that not everyone will have done.
Does anyone have any "must see" or "must do" ideas for the region that I might skip over in a book? [This message was edited by *bec* on November 08, 2005 at 03:34 AM.] |

You have plenty of time to research your trip. I like Lonely Planet for the maps and bus distances, but you can select whatever you want as the book you take. Then read other guides that you take fromn the library. Decide where you want to go and annotate the book you will take.
Things to see or not all depend on the amount of time you have and your intterests. If I were a psychic, I might try to answer those questions. |

Well, I spent several weeks in Guatemala and I recommend the Western Highlands including Lago Atitlan and Antigua. Its fun to go to places like Huehue or Chichicastenango by local buses and go to the markets. Just be careful because a lot of stuff gets stolen... Don't stay in Guatemala City - its not worth it!! It is really ugly and dangerous. Tikal is definately a highlight and there are lots of possibilities to go from there either to Mexico or Belize. Personally, I liked staying a few days in Rio Dulce on my way to Tikal. There is a really nice hot waterfall nearby to just hang out an meet people. Generally, besides all the research you do, don't make too many plans and don't bring too many books. You will meet so many people and travelling is much more fun when people and unexpected adventours bring you to your next "highlight".
Have fun and be aware of some simple saftey precautions - use a moneybelt for valuables, don't walk around at night time, don't hike vulcanoes in Guatemala! Katherin |

Guate is not at all worth staying in if you don't like shopping or museums, and you don't care to see the Kaminaljuyu ruins. The official artisan's market is realtively near the Archaeology Museum and both of these are in Zona 13.
