For thoses who love nature and wonderful landscapes, one place you cannot miss when in Salvador de Bahia is the Chapada Diamantina National Park. With a geological history spanning more than 1.5 billion years, you will discover some spectacular prehistoric rock formations. Scenery is breathtaking, with imposing table mountains, flowing grasslands and forested valleys, atlantic rain forest, extensive cave systems, many waterfalls, deep natural swimming pools, steams and rivers set in stunning canyons.

Trekking is the main attraction to enjoy the dramatic landscapes. The most popular is the cachoeira da Fumaça (“waterfall of smoke”), the highest free fall of brazil (380m). Before reaching the ground, the water blows into a fine smoke-like mist. There you will enjoy a stunning view over the canyons. Mother nature reveals its wonders right in front of your eyes, an unforgettable trekking experience. The enter of the trek is 2km from the valley of capao charming village.

Another Wonderful trekking is the Vale do Paty, a walk that can be done in 2 to 5 days starting from the Vale do Capao. Sometimes refered as the third best trekking in the world, it is undoubtdly the most impressive trekking in the Chapada Diamantiona national park. The trek crosses table mountains with their typical vegetation and panoramic views over canyons and mountains. The trekkers will discover rivers, streams and many natural waterfalls of a rare beauty. This trekking can be done very cheaply, with knowledgeable bilingual local guides who will take you to natives houses to stay on your way.

Both of thoses 2 trekkings are best reached from the vale do Capao, a small village with an impressive setting. The valley possess a diversified culture, with people of different parts of the world gathered around a lifestyle directed to human development and the respect of nature. You can organized your stay with travel agencies and pousadas (hotels) based there.

How to get there?
From Salvador de Bahia, go to the bus station (rodoviaria) and get a ticket to PALMEIRAS. (Company Real Express – 43 Reals – 6/7 hours). you have 2 departures a day. 7am and 11.30 pm. Don´t forget to bring warm closes in the bus because of the A/C. Once you get there, 4x4 will be waiting for transfer to the Valley of Capao (7 reals - 20km).

Where to stay at?
Pousada Lendas do Capao A hotel incorporated to the nature in a beautiful setting with view over the mountains. There´s a river you can swim in. They also have a chalet in a centennial jack tree 9m above ground with all facilities. Very friendly brazilian owner. They also organize trekking and health services.
