I'm going to be in Peru in July/August, and would like to go to machu picchu (I know being fairly touristy, but oh well!) I would like to know whats the best organised tour to book with just for machu picchu.

I want to do a four day trek, and then get the train back.

If you've got any suggestions of which group I should use, and there's a good way to book it from outside the country so I can plan around it, without paying excessively I would appreicated any of your help.

Thanks a lot

Ed

Most of my friends who already travelled to the Inca TRail did NOT recommend booking any thing in advance. There are always much better deals to find when you are already there.

I'd recommend SAS Travel in Cusco. Very professional, excellent equipment etc. Can be booked via internet as they're pouplar.
One advantage, as they're not the cheapest hence you don't get the cheapo travellers with you.

book when your in cusco. you wonthave to wait more than a few days and when your waiting you could easily spend that time well visiting the sacred valley or getting blind drunk, whichever you prefer. you could use SAS if you want to pay too much. far from being the cheapest they are the most expensive. I found that their reputation had made them arrogant and didnt want to use them. i found liz's adventures instead who midpriced with very good english speaking guides and a young fun crowd.

i wonder what 'cheap' travellers are. maybe they are just people without much to spend so they have to use their brains to find a good time instead of their wallets

I really wouldn't recommend getting blind drunk at altitude.
SAS are not all all arrogant - extremely well organised. I too was on a tight budget but decided to pay that little extra (it's not that much more) for what should be, and was, one of the best tours/hikes of your life. Guides were extremely knowledgeable about the surrounding areas, and gave interesting talks on the ruins you visit en route.
Many other travellers are too tight to spend an extra 30 or so dollars on a tour so they can visit the local nightclubs instead.
