Hi, anyone travelled to Quito and get a good place to stay ? Tell me about it ? My friend and I are travelling end of this year and next year and would like a cheapish, but nice !!!! place in Quito. Anyone recommend anywhere ? Can you get pickups from the airport quite easily ? Any good tips from the Galapagos and any good tips from getting to Quito to Lima ? Not by air. We start travelling in September and have never been before. Look forward to hearing from someone.

hey there ,
there are so many tips to give but i'll try to do it short but sweet . in quito there is only one place to go to : the centro del mundo hostel on the corner of lizardo and garcia streets . great location , safe , very friendly , a 24 hour party , various prices and a great place to meet people and get info . a taxi from the airport to the hostel will be about 5$ . the guide book i recomend is the southamerican handbook by footprint , they also have specific ones for each country . try to learn some spanish at home or in quito as it will make your adventure a greater one . most of the interesting places in ecuador are on or very close to the pan-american road leading south to peru . there are many busses all the time and it is no problem . going to peru : from cuenca ( el cafecito hostel is great ) you can take a 6 hour bus to loja . from loja you can do two things , first is taking a 30 minuit bus to vilcabamba in the wunderful sacred vally , chill out , do some hiking and then cross the border , second , you can skip vilcabamba and go streight to peru with a bus company called cooperative loja that has a night bus ( 8 hours ) that crosses the border and gets you to the first major city in peru - piora . from piora you can tour the remote parts of peru in the north or continue to the south . best thing is not to do it in one ride but to take a bus to trujillo ( 5 hours ) and from there take a 30 minuits taxi to huanchaco , huanchaco is a special fishermen village where they stil fish the way the inca did it , it has some importent ruins close by and a chance to get some good tan . from trujillo it is 12 hours to lima ( try the linea bus company ) galapagos - best thing is to get to the islands and book the tour from there , it will be cheaper and it will give you a chance to talk to other travelers . remember that you have to pay 100$ cash on entrence to the park . a cheap boat will be 40$ per day and you can find first class boats from 65$ ( juantanamera is a good one )- take the 8 day tour and bring lots of sun block and film . hope i helped , happy travels , peace, dan. |

There are stacks of places to stay in Quito, especially around La Mariscal (gringolandia). It depends what you want (a dorm, shared or single rooms/private or shared bathroom/etc.), and what you call cheap ($3 - $10?). A good mid-budget place is Hostal Pickett on Presidente Wilson and Juan Leon Mera ($8 a night for a single, but the rooms are bright, clean and have cable TV). Recommend you arrange someone to pick you up from the airport as first arrival in Quito is pretty mad. Some of the hotels listed in the Rough Guide can arrange free pickups when you reserve a room with them.
You can bus it all the way from Quito to Lima, but you're best off breaking this up into shorter trips, especially as there's quite a bit to see between those two cities. quote: |
