I will be taking Mefloquine (Lariam) for 3 months whilst I'm travelling through Central & South America, but my doctor will not give me any 'emergency' supplies. I am notoriously forgetful & lose all sorts - I still need the elastic on my gloves to go around my back & down my sleeves I'm that bad!!

I would like to have a back up supply of a few tablets so does anyone know if I can buy Lariam over the counter without a doctors presciption? I'll be visiting mexico, Belize, CR, Hond, Guat, Ecuador & Peru.

Cheers
Sammylou

I have travelled in these countries and would recommend, if you feel ill and have symptoms of malaria, to stop by a health clinic and have your blood tested. If you do test positive, they will be able to provide you a treatment that will most likely be more effective than if you self-medicated.

Regarding the response above... Do yourself a favor and don't get malaria. Keep the pills with your passport, money, whatever (do you fear losing those as well?). Mefloquine will prevent you from getting malaria if you take one tablet a week. But if you let yourself get Malaria due to forgetfulness or whatever, you'll regret it. I've seen people die of Malaria and it's not something to be taken lightly. And yes, taking Larium (Mefloquine) is worth the risk.
