I have often used rough guides but was a bit worried when I read about the fatal crocodile attack in a Kenyan lake which the guide said was croc free. Is this error a one off or are there other errors I should look out for in the guides?

The report in the Daily Telegraph (14 March) indicated this attack was as much a shock to locals as to us at Rough Guides. Even the warden of Tsavo West National Park, who has led scuba dives in the lake and been warden for nine years, said "I've never heard of a crocodile in Lake Chala. I'm utterly astonished". Our advice, like all the information in Rough Guides, is given in good faith, to the best of our ability. We have been deeply saddened and perplexed by Amy Nicholl's death and of course we are changing the advice about Lake Chala in the new edition of the guide, which will be out next month.

I wouldn't trust many watering holes, that is 2nd croc attack over there. I was on Lake Kariba where they said crocs didn't go into the middle of the lake but that is not true - they follow the house boats as tourists feed them. Always be careful of swimming - speak to the locals and don't go by some tourist book.
